The furry fandom is a community built around a love for anthropomorphic animals. These are characters that have human-like traits, such as speaking or wearing clothes.

Some characters might only show human emotions to be considered anthropomorphic. Fans in this group often call themselves furries. For many people, being part of this fandom provides a strong sense of belonging. It is a place where people can share their creativity and find friends.

Many fans express their interests through making things. They often create a unique character called a fursona. Some people build elaborate animal costumes known as fursuits.

These suits can be very simple or quite complex. Some even have moving jaws or animatronic parts. A full suit can cost anywhere from $1,000 to over $6,600. Not everyone owns a full suit, though many wear partials like ears or tails.

The history of the fandom traces back many years. In 1976, Ken Fletcher and Reed Waller created a press association called Vootie. This was dedicated to animal-focused art. Later, in 1980, a discussion at a science fiction convention helped the concept grow.
