It centers around music festivals, clubs, and organized meetings. Many people find joy in the theatricality of the scene. The style often includes dark, solid black clothes. Fans also use dark makeup and black hair to complete the look. This fashion draws from many eras, like the Victorian and Edwardian times. It also takes ideas from glam rock and punk.

Creating the goth look is like building a collage of different ideas. People mix styles from new wave and the new romantics. They also look to old movies for inspiration. For example, classic horror films and German Expressionism are very important. Some clubs even use props like swirling smoke and cobwebs.

These decorations make the clubs feel like a spooky story. This way of dressing is a way to show personal style. It helps people feel part of a special group.

The history of goth began in the United Kingdom. It grew out of the gothic rock music genre. This music came from British post-punk bands in the late 1970s.

In the early 1980s, it became a real youth subculture. A writer named Steve Keaton used the term "punk gothique" in 1981. This term was first used by Steve Abbott of the band UK Decay. Later, the name "goth" became the main way to describe the scene.

Many famous places and bands helped the culture grow. In Leeds, the F Club was a very important meeting spot. In London, the Batcave club opened in July 1982.

This club was a central place for the emerging scene. Bands like Bauhaus, The Cure, and Siouxsie and the Banshees defined the sound. In the United States, deathrock grew in California during this same time. New York and Los Angeles also became big centers for the music. Many different record labels helped spread these sounds to more people.

Goth connects to many things you might already know. It links to gothic literature, which uses mystery and ghosts.

Writers like Edgar Allan Poe and Bram Stoker are very important here. The culture also connects to famous movies and TV shows. You might see goth styles in films like Beetlejuice or The Crow. Even the cartoon South Park has characters who are goths. These stories often use the dark and moody themes that goths love. It shows how one kind of art can influence many others.
