Youth subcultures are special groups made by young people. They have their own styles and interests.

These groups help people find an identity. This identity is different from their family or school. Some groups are even called countercultures. This means they show hostility to the main culture. They use different ways to express themselves. These ways might be a specific lifestyle or a mode of expression.

Many groups use music to show who they are. You might hear about punks or goths. There are also emos, ravers, and metalheads.

Some people use the word "scene" to describe a group. A scene might be very exclusive. It could be based on fashion or politics. Sometimes a scene is tied to a place. For example, there is a London goth scene. There is also a Detroit drum and bass scene.

Scholars have many different ideas about these groups. Stuart Hall and Tony Jefferson looked at how they resist power. They said these groups use rituals to challenge the establishment. Other thinkers, like those in the Frankfurt School, disagree. They think youth culture is part of capitalism. They believe it is used to sell things to young people. Stan Cohen had another idea about the media. He said the media labels people to create these groups.

When did these subcultures actually begin? Steven Mintz says they did not exist until about 1955. Before then, children wanted to grow up fast. P. Lewis says rock and roll helped start them. However, some historians think they started even earlier. They point to the flapper during the inter-war period. Dick Hebdige also studied how these groups challenge the dominant culture. He looked at how age and gender play a role.

You might see these groups in your own life. Many high schools have groups called crowds. In the United States, you might hear of jocks. You might also hear of geeks, preppies, or emos. These names can change depending on where you live. In the Netherlands, students also identify with peer crowds. These groups are a way for young people to navigate the world. They help them find their place in a large society.
