A gang is a group of people who stay together as associates or friends. These groups usually have a clear leader and an internal organization. Most gangs claim to control a specific piece of territory in a community. They often work together to do things that are against the law. This type of activity is often called organized crime.

Some people use the word gang to mean any close group, but it often has a negative meaning. It can describe groups that use violence to get what they want.

Different types of gangs have different ways of working. Some are very large and break into smaller groups called cliques or sets. A person's status in a gang might depend on their age or how much money they bring in.

Some groups, like the Mafia, act like a shadow government for the underworld. They might settle disputes between other criminals or oversee illegal agreements. Other groups, called drug cartels, focus mainly on the illegal drug trade. There are also street gangs made of youths and biker gangs that use motorcycle clubs to run their businesses.

History shows that gangs have existed for a very long time. In the 1600s, London was home to groups like the Mims and the Hectors. These gangs sometimes wore colored ribbons to show which faction they belonged to.

In the United States, gangs began to grow after the American Revolution in 1783. As people moved from rural areas to big cities, gangs became more common. The 40 Thieves was the first street gang in New York City around the late 1820s. In the Old West, famous groups like the Wild Bunch were known for their lawlessness.

Many famous organizations have existed for many years in different parts of the world. The Italian Cosa Nostra and the Japanese yakuza are well-known examples. In the 1920s, the city of Chicago had over 1,000 different gangs.

Some gangs even form inside prisons to help members protect one another. Groups like the Mexican Mafia are examples of this. In France, gangs like the Apaches were active during a time called the Belle Époque.

Today, we see many different kinds of groups that follow different rules. Some gangs, called punk gangs, follow political or philosophical beliefs. These groups might show up at social protests or demonstrations.

Other groups, called vigilantes, claim they are fighting against gangs, even though they act like gangs themselves. Understanding how these groups are organized helps leaders find ways to keep communities safe. Whether they are in cities or rural areas, these groups change how people live together.
