Today, the word is often used for many things. It can mean being a thief or even a pirate. Some people call it gangsterism or terrorism. The word itself has a long history. It comes from old Germanic laws. These laws used the word "ban" to describe people who were outlaws. In Italy, the word "bandito" means a person who is banned.

History shows that many people became bandits for different reasons. In Ming China, many people lived in very poor areas. They often faced famine, which means there was not enough food. Historian James W. Tong says people had to make a hard choice. They had to choose between surviving hunger or surviving as an outlaw. Many bandits in China were actually soldiers. These soldiers were often very poor and used weapons to make a living. They were very good at riding horses and using bows or swords. They even used whistling arrows to warn their victims.

In Europe, banditry has happened for a very long time. During the Middle Ages, some leaders were known as robber barons. In Italy, banditry became very common after the country unified in the 1860s. Some bandits, like Carmine Crocco, became famous folk heroes to the people. Other groups, like the ones in Sicily, also became known as heroes. In Sardinia, there is a group called the anonima sarda. This shows that banditry can happen in many different places and times. Even during World War II, the term was used in a very dark way. German authorities called their opponents "bandits" to treat them as criminals.

Bandits often had very strong leaders to guide their groups. These leaders were often great fighters and riders. Some leaders, like Zhang Mao in China, were very wealthy and powerful. He even used his money to make friends with important officials. This helped him stay safe for a while. However, the government worked hard to stop them. In 1509, a special official named Ning Gao used very harsh methods. He wanted to scare people so they would not become bandits. He eventually captured Zhang Mao, and the leader was executed in Beijing.

Being a bandit was not always a permanent job for everyone. Some people would start as bandits and then become police. Other times, people would work for the government and then become bandits. For example, a man named Tiger Yang once worked for an official. Later, he became a bandit himself. Sometimes, small groups of bandits grew into huge rebel armies. In the late Ming Dynasty, leaders like Gao Yingxiang led large rebellions. These groups would fight the government and try to take over cities.
