Contract killing is a very serious type of crime. It is also called murder-for-hire. This happens when one person pays another person to kill someone else. This is done through an illegal agreement. The person who does the killing is often called a hitman. Some people also use the word sicario. This word comes from Spanish.

These crimes do not happen very often. They make up only a small part of all murders. For example, they were about 6% of murders in Scotland. This was true from 1993 to 2002. In Australia, the number was even lower. Contract killings were only 2% of murders there during that time.

A study looked at these crimes in Australia. It looked at 162 contract murders and attempts. This study took place between 1989 and 2002. Researchers found a common reason for these crimes. Many people did this to get insurance policy payouts. This means they wanted money from an insurance plan.

The study also showed how much money was paid. Payments varied from $5,000 to $30,000 per killing. The average payment was $15,000. Most people used firearms to do the job. Firearms are guns used as weapons. These facts help us understand how these crimes work.

Some people compare hitmen to serial killers. Both types of people can be driven by money. They may also feel very little emotion. However, they are not the same thing. They have different goals for their crimes. This is a key difference between them.
