Bandenbekämpfung was a harsh military doctrine used by Germany. It was a way to fight resistance in areas behind the front lines. The term means fighting "bandits." German leaders used this name to justify extreme brutality. They believed they could ignore the normal laws of war. This allowed them to target many different groups of people. They fought armed guerrillas and regular civilians alike.

The way this worked was often very simple and very violent. Military leaders used "collective measures" against entire communities. This meant punishing a whole village for the actions of a few. They used hostage-taking to stop people from sabotaging their paths. Soldiers were often told to show no mercy to anyone suspected of helping the enemy. Sometimes, they even blamed their own mistakes on these "bandits." This led to the destruction of many towns and villages.

This way of fighting has a long history in Germany. It grew during the time of the German Empire after 1871. Leaders like Otto von Bismarck and Helmuth von Moltke the Elder helped shape these ideas. They believed in using military solutions for every problem. In the early 1900s, German troops used these tactics in China. They also used them in Africa during the Herero and Nama genocide. In that conflict, an estimated 66 to 75 percent of the Herero people died.

During World War II, the doctrine became even more deadly. Nazi leaders like Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler encouraged this violence. They wanted to strike terror into the population to stop resistance. In places like Serbia, Greece, and Russia, many people were killed. In Crete, General Kurt Student ordered the extermination of the male population in some areas. Many of these crimes were hidden behind coded words. They used terms like "special treatment" to describe their actions.

It is important to see how these ideas connected to larger events. Bandenbekämpfung was a tool used to carry out the Holocaust. Historian Alex J. Kay estimates that one million civilians died from this warfare. This number does not include the 13 to 14 million people murdered by the Nazis in total. These actions show how military rules can be used to cause great harm. Understanding this helps us learn about the importance of the laws of war.
