The Romani Holocaust was a very dark time for the Roma and Sinti people. These are groups of people living in Europe. During World War II, the Nazi government in Germany targeted them for harm. This was a genocide, which means a group is targeted for destruction. The Nazis used many mean ways to hurt these communities. They used forced labor and took people from their homes. Many people lost their lives during this period.

Before the war, some people used wrong ideas about science. They believed in something called scientific racism. This idea claimed that people could be ranked by their biology. This was not true, but it was used to justify prejudice. In the late 1800s, Germany was also changing very fast. New factories and machines changed how people worked. This made it harder for Roma people to work as craftsmen. Their traditional ways of life began to break apart.

Nazi leaders used laws to take away rights. In 1935, they passed the Nuremberg Laws. These laws said the Roma were enemies of the state. This meant they were treated similarly to Jewish people. By 1936, Roma people lost the right to vote. They were also moved to special camps near cities. This was done to keep them under close watch. The government also used doctors to study them in bad ways.

In 1942, the harm became even more direct. A leader named Heinrich Himmler ordered the deportation of Sinti and Roma. Many were sent to a large camp called Auschwitz-Birkenau. This camp had a special area just for them. Out of 23,000 people sent there, about 21,000 did not survive. In other places, the military and police killed people in massacres. Historians think between 250,000 and 500,000 Roma and Sinti were killed.

Today, people work hard to remember this history. It is important to learn the truth about what happened. In 1982, West Germany officially recognized the genocide. Poland also made August 2 a special day of memory. Many beautiful memorials have been built in different countries. These monuments honor the lives of the people lost. They help us remember to treat everyone with fairness and respect.
