During World War II, Nazi Germany used special sites to kill many people. These were called extermination camps or death camps.

Most of these camps were located in Central Europe. Many were built in Poland because that is where many Jewish people lived. The Nazis used these camps to carry out a plan called the "Final Solution." This plan was meant to kill the Jewish people of Europe. Over 2.7 million people were murdered in these specific camps. Most of the victims were Jews, but other groups were also targeted.

The camps worked in a very organized and cruel way. The Nazis often lied to the people being moved. They told them they were being "resettled" or sent to work.

This was a way to keep the truth a secret. People were often brought to the camps by train. Once they arrived, they were killed using gas. Some camps used gas from large engines. Other camps used a chemical called Zyklon B. This was a very fast and systematic way to kill large groups of people.

This system did not start all at once. It grew from earlier, secret programs. The Nazis had already tested using poison gas in a program called Aktion T4. That program targeted hospital patients with disabilities.

The Nazis took what they learned from that program and used it in the camps. In 1941, they began building more killing centers. They wanted to carry out their plans on a much larger scale. This led to the creation of the major death camps used during the war.

There were six main extermination camps. These were Chełmno, Bełżec, Sobibor, Treblinka, Majdanek, and Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Some camps, like Bełżec, Sobibor, and Treblinka, were built only for killing. People were often murdered within hours of arriving there. Other camps, like Auschwitz and Majdanek, were also used for forced labor. This meant some people were made to work before they died. The camps were often built near railway lines to make moving people easier. Many different leaders, like Adolf Eichmann and Heinrich Himmler, were involved in these plans.

It is important to know the difference between these camps and others. Many people also died in concentration camps. Concentration camps were often used to hold people as prisoners or for forced labor.

In those camps, many people died from hunger, disease, or hard work. However, extermination camps were designed specifically for mass murder. We learn about these camps today to understand the truth of history. Knowing these facts helps us remember the people who were lost. It also helps us understand how such terrible things can happen.
