The Auschwitz Album is a collection of important historical photos. It shows what happened at a camp in occupied Poland. This camp was called Auschwitz II-Birkenau. The photos were taken during the Second World War. They serve as a visual record of the Holocaust. These images help us understand a very dark time in history.

The images show a specific way the camp worked. They follow Jewish people arriving from Hungary in 1944. The people arrived in train boxcars. After they arrived, a process called selection took place. SS doctors and camp wardens chose the people. Some were chosen to work in the camp. Others were sent to the gas chambers to be killed.

Photographers from the camp's identification service took these pictures. This group was known as the Erkennungsdienst. They usually took ID photos and fingerprints of prisoners. We do not know exactly who took the album photos. It might have been Bernhard Walter or Ernst Hoffmann. These men were leaders in the identification service. The camp director, Rudolf Höss, may have taken some too.

The album has 56 pages and 193 photographs. It was originally called "Resettlement of the Jews from Hungary." The photos show the work of the Canada storage facilities. These areas held belongings taken from the prisoners. During this time, many people were moved to the camp. Adolf Eichmann helped speed up these deportations. About 650,000 people were sent to Auschwitz in three months.

A woman named Lili Jacob found the album by chance. She was a survivor of the camp. She found it in a cupboard at the Dora camp. She was shocked to see her own family in the photos. This was a huge coincidence. Later, she gave the album to a museum in Israel. It is now kept at Yad Vashem. This museum helps people remember the victims of the Holocaust.
