He was born in 1912 in Sweden. His family was very successful and well-known. His father was a naval officer who died before Raoul was born. His mother and grandmother raised him together. Raoul grew up to be an architect and a businessman. He even studied at the University of Michigan in the United States. While studying, he worked as a rickshaw handler in Chicago. He enjoyed traveling and even used hitchhiking to see new places. He said that traveling this way taught him how to talk to all kinds of people.

During World War II, things became very dangerous in Hungary. The Nazi group and local fascists were treating Jewish people very unfairly. They were taking many people away to camps.

Wallenberg worked for a trading company in Stockholm. This company was owned by a man named Kálmán Lauer. Because of the war, Wallenberg became Lauer's personal representative. He traveled to Budapest many times to help with business. During these trips, he learned to speak Hungarian. He also saw how the Nazis used paperwork to run their operations. This knowledge would help him later in his life.

In 1944, Wallenberg went to Budapest as a special envoy for Sweden. He had a very important job to do.

He wanted to protect Jewish people from the Nazis. Wallenberg began issuing special documents called protective passports. These papers helped show that the people were under Swedish protection. He also found buildings in the city to shelter people. He declared that these buildings were actually Swedish territory. Experts believe he helped about 4,500 people with this paperwork. His goal was to keep people safe during a very dark time.

In January 1945, Wallenberg disappeared in Budapest.

This happened during a battle involving the Red Army. Soviet agents detained him because they suspected he was a spy. After that, no one knew for sure where he was. In 1957, Soviet authorities said he died in a Moscow prison in 1947. They thought he died from a heart problem. However, a document from 2023 suggests he might have been executed. Some people even believed they saw him in prisons much later. His true fate remains a mystery that people still study today.

Even though his life ended in mystery, his courage is remembered. Many countries have given him great honors. He is an honorary citizen of Canada, Hungary, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Israel.

In 1981, the United States also made him an honorary citizen. This was only the second time anyone had received that honor. In 2012, the U.S. Congress gave him a Congressional Gold Medal. Many streets and statues around the world are named after him. People still use his name to celebrate being brave and kind.
