He ran a group called the HVA. This was the foreign intelligence part of the Stasi. The Stasi was the security service for East Germany. Wolf led this group for 34 years during the Cold War. Many people thought he was one of the best spymasters ever. For a long time, Western agencies did not know what he looked like. They called him "the man without a face."

This changed in 1978 when a Swedish agency took his photo in Stockholm.

Wolf had a very interesting early life. He was born on January 19, 1923, in Hechingen. His father, Friedrich Wolf, was a writer and a communist. Because of his family's beliefs, Wolf moved to Moscow with them. He lived in Russia and went to school there. In 1936, he even got Soviet identity papers. Later, he studied airplane engineering in Moscow. During the war, he worked as a newsreader for German radio.

One of his spies was named Günter Guillaume. Guillaume was a close friend of the West German leader, Willy Brandt. When people found out Guillaume was a spy, Brandt had to resign in 1974.
