This meant people were shot for trying to leave the country. Mielke also led the forced collectivization of family farms. This process turned private land into large, state-run farms. As a result, many people fled to West Germany to escape these changes.
Mielke's influence extended far beyond the borders of East Germany.
He helped establish pro-Soviet police states in various parts of the Third World. The Stasi provided covert training and weapons to far-left guerrilla groups.
