His path to power started in the military. He joined the army at a very young age. A general named Aman Andom became his mentor. Aman helped him graduate from the Holetta Military Academy in 1957. Mengistu even traveled to the United States for training. He studied in Illinois and Maryland to learn about weapons. He also studied in Kansas to improve his skills. These years helped him become a skilled officer. He learned to speak English very well during this time.

In 1974, a big change happened in Ethiopia. The old Emperor, Haile Selassie, was overthrown. A group of soldiers called the Derg took control.

Mengistu was a member of this group. He was very good at moving up the political ladder. He outmaneuvered other officers to gain more power. By 1977, he became the main leader of the Derg. He wanted to change the economy using new socialist ideas. He took control of land and businesses for the state.

His time as leader was marked by many conflicts. One period was called the Red Terror from 1977 to 1978. This was a violent time against people who disagreed with him.

Many people died during these years of fighting. Ethiopia also fought a war with Somalia in the Ogaden region. The Soviet Union and Cuba helped Ethiopia win that war. Later, a very bad famine happened from 1983 to 1985. This famine caused much suffering for many Ethiopians.

Eventually, Mengistu's rule came to an end. In May 1991, he fled from Ethiopia. He moved to a country called Zimbabwe to live. His departure helped end the Ethiopian Civil War. An Ethiopian court later found him guilty of genocide. However, he was not there to face the court. He still lives in Harare, Zimbabwe, today. His life shows how much one person can change a nation. His story remains a very important part of history.
