Negasso Gidada was a very important leader in Ethiopia. He served as the president of the country for six years. His time in office started in 1995 and ended in 2001.

Negasso was born on 8 September 1943. He spent his life working in politics and studying history. He wanted to help his country find its way. His work changed how many people saw the Ethiopian government.

Negasso was a person who loved to learn about the past. He studied social history at Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany. He earned a doctorate, which is a very high degree.

His thesis was about the Sayyoo Oromo people. This group lived in Southwestern Wallaga, Ethiopia. He even taught history at Addis Ababa University as a lecturer. He wanted to share what he knew with his students.

His family and personal life were also quite interesting. His father, Gidada Solon, was a local minister for a Protestant church. This church was in the Dembidolo area of western Ethiopia.

Negasso married a German nurse named Regina Abelt. She was also a midwife, which is a person who helps babies be born. Because she was a German citizen, many newspapers in Europe wrote about her. However, she was very quiet and stayed out of the public eye in Ethiopia.

Negasso had a long and busy political career. Before he was president, he was the Minister of Information.

He was also a member of the Oromo People's Democratic Organisation. He became president on 22 August 1995. Later, he left his political group in June 2001. In 2005, he was elected to the House of Peoples' Representatives. He ran as an independent from the Mirab Welega Zone.

Later in life, Negasso worked to bring people together. He helped start the Forum for Democratic Dialogue in 2008.

In 2009, he joined the Unity for Democracy and Justice Party. He said he joined this group to try and unite Ethiopia. He even asked the people for forgiveness for a mistake. He said the 1995 constitution did not include all political parties. Negasso passed away in Germany on 27 April 2019.
