Menelik's journey to power was full of many different steps. He was born in 1844 as Sahle Maryam in a place called Angolalla. When he was only 11 years old, he was taken to a fort called Magdala. He lived there for many years until he escaped in 1865. After his escape, he returned to Shewa to become its king. He worked hard to build his strength and make many new friends. He even used feasts and alliances to win the support of local people.

Menelik was very smart about how he used new tools and ideas. He was very interested in how machines and weapons worked. He talked with people from Europe to get modern weapons for his army. He also worked with a Swiss engineer named Alfred Ilg. These tools helped him expand his territory into new areas. He grew his land by bringing in many different groups of people. This helped him build a very strong base of power.

In 1889, Menelik became the Emperor of Ethiopia at Mount Entoto.

This was a very important time because Italy wanted to control his land. Italy and Menelik signed a treaty called the Treaty of Wuchale in 1889. However, the two versions of the treaty said different things. Menelik realized this was not fair and decided to fight back. In 1896, he led an army of over 100,000 people to a big battle. They won the Battle of Adwa and kept Ethiopia free.

Menelik did much more than just lead armies in battle. He helped build a modern country with many new things. He started a state bank and built new schools for people. He even helped start the Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway.

These things helped connect his people and their economy. Even though his work was sometimes hard for some groups, he changed Ethiopia forever. He died in 1913 after a long and busy life.
