He started this new era by defeating the last king of the Zagwe dynasty. The Zagwe kings had ruled Ethiopia for several centuries before him. Yekuno Amlak came from an ancient Amhara family. Some old stories say his family was related to the biblical King Solomon. Historians say there is no real evidence for this family story. However, his family used this story to support their right to rule.

Many stories explain how Yekuno Amlak rose to power. One legend tells of a rooster that made a prophecy. The story says a rooster crowed for three months near his house. It said that whoever ate the bird's head would become king. In the story, Yekuno Amlak ate the head and became the ruler. Other stories say he was a prisoner on Mount Malot. He managed to escape from the Zagwe King, Za-Ilmaknun. He then gathered many followers to fight for his cause. He won a big fight at the Battle of Ansata to take the throne.

As an emperor, Yekuno Amlak was a very busy man. He used his throne name, Tesfa Iyasus. He worked to grow the size of his land. He even campaigned against the Kingdom of Damot. This kingdom was located south of the Abbay River. He also had good relations with the Emirs of Harar. Because of these friendships, he built a new capital called Ankober. This city was located near the principality of the Emirs. He was a leader who looked to expand his influence across the region.

He also communicated with many other powerful people. Yekuno Amlak sent letters to the Byzantine Emperor, Michael VIII. He even sent several giraffes as gifts to the emperor. He also tried to work with Muslim neighbors. He wrote a letter to the Mamluk Sultan Baibars in 1273. He wanted help getting a new bishop for the Ethiopian Church. This was a hard job because of many different leaders. He sometimes had trouble getting the help he needed from others. These connections show how his kingdom fit into the wider world.

Yekuno Amlak is also remembered for building important things. He is credited with building the Church of Genneta Maryam. This church is located near Lalibela. It is famous because it has very old wall paintings. These are some of the earliest paintings found in Ethiopia. After he died on June 19, 1285, his family honored him. His descendant, Emperor Baeda Maryam I, moved his body to a different church. This church was called Atronsa Maryam. His life changed the history of Ethiopia for hundreds of years.
