The Solomonic dynasty was a famous line of rulers in the Ethiopian Empire. This family held power for many centuries, from the late 1200s all the way to 1974. They were known as Ethiopian Orthodox Christian monarchs. The dynasty was very important to the history of the land. It shaped how the empire grew and changed over time. Even today, people remember this long line of leaders.

This ruling family began with a man named Yekuno Amlak. In the year 1270, he overthrew the Zagwe dynasty to take control. Yekuno Amlak was a noble from a place called Shewa. He claimed his family came from a very special line. He said he was a descendant of the legendary King Menelik I. According to stories, Menelik I was the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.

Many of these stories were written in an old book called the Kebra Nagast. This text was written in the 14th century. It said the Queen of Sheba visited Jerusalem and had a son with Solomon. This son, Menelik I, supposedly started the royal line in Ethiopia. However, modern historians say there is no real evidence for these legends. They believe the stories were used to help the new rulers stay in power. Despite this, the stories became a big part of how people felt about their nation.

The dynasty had many different branches of the family. Some branches ruled from places like Gondar or Tigray. One of the most famous leaders was Emperor Haile Selassie. He was crowned as a king in 1928 and as the King of Kings in 1930. His reign lasted a long time, but it eventually came to an end. In 1974, a coup d'état happened, and he was removed from power. This event marked the end of the Solomonic dynasty's rule.

The symbols of this dynasty are still very well known. The Lion of Judah was a major symbol for the empire. It appeared on the imperial flag and the coat of arms. The coat of arms even showed an imperial throne with two angels. Today, the family no longer rules Ethiopia. However, the history of the Solomonic dynasty remains a key part of the world's story. Many people still find wonder in these ancient tales of kings and queens.
