This royal family had ruled for a very long time. Some people call him the founder of the Gondar line of his family. He had many different names for his throne. One of those names was Seltan Sagad. His life is recorded in a special book called a chronicle. This book was written by official writers of the empire.

Susenyos had a very difficult childhood. When he was a young boy, a group called the Oromos captured him. They also killed his father, Abeto Fasil. Susenyos lived with the Oromos for over two years. During this time, he learned their language and their customs. He was finally rescued in 1585 by his uncle, Emperor Sarsa Dengel. After his rescue, a Queen Mother named Admas Mogasa helped teach him. She supervised his early education so he could become a leader.

Getting the throne was not easy for Susenyos. After the old emperor died, many nobles wanted power for themselves. They saw Susenyos as a threat to their own plans. This forced him into exile for a time. He lived as a wandering prince with a few followers. He married a princess named Wald Saala to help his position. He spent many years fighting in wars to gain control. Finally, he won the Battle of Gol in 1607. This victory made him the true emperor of Ethiopia.

Susenyos was known as a very brave captain. People who met him said he was tall and handsome. He had large eyes and a well-groomed beard. He often wore fine clothes like crimson velvet. He was a skilled leader in many different battles. He fought against rebels who tried to trick people by pretending to be the old king. He also fought to protect his borders from other groups. He even won many battles against the Oromo people.

One of the biggest changes under Susenyos was religion. He chose to make Catholic Christianity the official state religion. He was interested in this because of a man named Pedro Páez. He also hoped to get military help from Portugal and Spain. This was a very big change for the people of Ethiopia. Some people felt this change was not right for their land. His reign was a very important part of Ethiopian history.
