As a young boy, Susenyos was captured by a group called the Oromos. He lived with them for two years. During that time, he learned their language and their ways. Later, a relative helped rescue him. A queen mother then helped teach him.

Susenyos was a brave leader and a skilled captain. He spent much of his life leading armies. He fought many battles to protect his land. He even fought against people who claimed to be the old king, Yaqob. Eventually, Susenyos won and became the true emperor.

He also made a big change to how people practiced religion. He chose to make Catholic Christianity the official state religion. He did this partly because of a man named Pedro Páez. He also hoped to get help from Portugal and Spain. This was a very important time in the history of Ethiopia.
