Dawit was part of a royal family. He had one wife and eight children.

Early in his rule, a woman named Eleni helped him. She was a wise leader. She asked Portugal for help. She wanted to protect Ethiopia from nearby states.

Later, a leader named Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi led an army against Ethiopia. This led to a long war. Ahmad had many guns from the Ottoman Empire. Dawit did not have enough weapons to fight back easily.
