Lalibela was a king in Ethiopia. He ruled from 1181 to 1221. He was part of the Zagwe ruling family.

When he was born, bees flew around him. People thought this meant he would be a great leader. His name means "the bees recognise his sovereignty."

Lalibela had a hard time becoming king. His brother, Kedus Harbe, was the ruler first. Lalibela had to leave home for a while. He lived in Jerusalem for many years. Later, he fought a battle to take the throne. He won the battle and became king.

Lalibela wanted to build a new capital city. He named many parts of the city after places in the Bible. He named a river the River Jordan. He is most famous for his churches. He built eleven churches by carving them into solid rock. Some stories say angels helped him. Other stories say it took 24 years to build them. These rock churches are still very important today. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church calls him a saint.
