From 1529 to 1543, a big war took place. It was between the Christian Ethiopian Empire and the Muslim Adal Sultanate. A leader named Imam Ahmad led the Adal forces. He used new weapons like cannons and guns. His army won many battles early on. They even took control of most of the Ethiopian land.

Ethiopia needed help to keep its land. They got help from Portugal. These helpers brought four hundred musketeers. A man named Cristóvão da Gama led them. He worked with local leaders to fight back.

The war changed everything. In 1543, there was a final battle at Wayna Daga. The Ethiopian and Portuguese forces won this fight. Imam Ahmad died during the battle. This caused the Adal army to leave.

The war was very hard for everyone. Both sides lost many people and spent all their power. This made the two groups much weaker. Because they were weak, other groups like the Oromo moved into the area. This war changed the region for a very long time.
