Adal was a very busy place for trade. Merchants sold things like gold, ivory, and cattle. They also traded grain and fruit.

They used coins called dinars to buy goods. They even bought colorful glass from China to decorate their homes.

Adal had many important cities. These cities had mosques and big walls. They also had cisterns to hold water. The empire grew very large under Sultan Badlay. It reached from Somalia to Sudan.

Adal often fought with the Christian empire of Abyssinia. In the 1500s, leaders like Imam Ahmed used new tools. They used muskets and cannons in war. This conflict even drew in the Portuguese and Ottoman Empires. The empire lasted until the year 1577.
