The empire was a very important part of the history of East Africa.

Trade was the main way the empire grew its wealth. Merchants moved goods through a huge network of paths. They traded things like gold, ivory, and cattle. They also sold millet, barley, and fruit.

People used special coins called dinars and dirhems to pay for things. They even imported beautiful glass bracelets from the Ming Dynasty in China. These items helped decorate the homes and palaces of the people in Adal.

Adal had many busy cities and important ports. Cities like Harar, Berbera, and Zeila were very successful.

These cities had many interesting buildings. You could find mosques, shrines, and houses with large courtyards. They also built walled enclosures and cisterns to hold water. At its largest point, the empire stretched from Cape Guardafui in Somalia all the way to Suakin in Sudan. This allowed the empire to connect the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean.

History shows that Adal often fought with the Christian Solomonic Dynasty of Abyssinia.

Many leaders led the empire through these many years of war. Sabr ad-Din III founded the sultanate on the Harar plateau after returning from Arabia. Later, Sultan Jamal ad-Din II became a very successful ruler. In the 1500s, leaders like Imam Ahmed ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi used muskets and cannons. These wars were so large that they even involved the Portuguese and Ottoman Empires.

Today, we can still see the names of this empire in the world. The modern Awdal region in Somaliland carries a name linked to the old kingdom. The empire lasted for a long time and finally moved its capital to Aussa in 1577.
