This means the leaders were experts at managing water. They built large dams and dykes on the Shebelle River. They also made huge stone wells out of limestone. These wells helped people and animals find water in dry areas. Many of these wells were still used long into the 20th century.

The empire was a major center for global trade. Ships sailed from the coast to many distant places. They traveled to the Near East and East Asia. Some people believe the Ajuran were the first Africans to have contact with China.

To help with business, they used their own special coins. These coins even followed patterns used by the Ottoman Empire. This showed that the Ajuran were economically independent. They were part of a huge web of commerce in the Islamic world.

Their roots went back to the Garen Kingdom in the 13th century. As the empire grew, it developed an Islamic government. The leaders used many important titles to run the land. An Imam was the head of the state. An Emir was the commander of the army and navy. Other officials like Wazirs collected taxes to help the empire run.

In the city of Barawa, the Portuguese burned and looted the area. However, the local people fought back and eventually rebuilt the city. The Ajuran also worked with the Ottoman Empire to protect the Indian Ocean. They even sent a fleet to join a joint expedition in the 1580s. This helped drive the Portuguese out of several important cities.

This caused many people to revolt against them. The empire lost control of its important port cities and fertile farms. By the early 1700s, the Ajuran empire had mostly disappeared from the region. Even so, their history lived on through other smaller sultanates. These smaller groups helped ensure that some of their traditions continued.
