The Tanzimat was a time of big changes for the Ottoman Empire. It lasted from 1839 to 1876. The word Tanzimat means "Reorganization." This period started because the empire was losing its strength. It was struggling to compete with European armies. Leaders wanted to modernize their laws and their military. They also wanted to make life better for everyone living there.

To make these changes, the leaders focused on many different areas. They created new ways to run the government and the military. They built modern things like railways and telegraph networks. They also set up new schools and universities. The empire started using paper banknotes for the first time. They even created a new national flag and anthem. These steps helped the empire try to act like a modern nation.

Important people led this movement. Mustafa Reşid Pasha was a key leader who helped start the reforms. Other statesmen like Mehmed Emin Âli Pasha and Fuad Pasha also played big roles. They worked under Sultans like Abdul Mejid I and Abdul Aziz. In 1839, the Edict of Gülhane was signed. This document promised to protect the life and honor of all subjects. It also aimed to make taxes and military service more fair.

Many specific rules were made during this time. In 1844, the empire held its first nationwide census. The Imperial Reform Edict of 1856 promised legal equality for people of all religions. This was a major step for the many different groups in the empire. They also worked to stop the slave trade in certain areas. By 1876, Midhat Pasha helped write a new constitution. This began the First Constitutional Era.
