The Young Turk Revolution was a major change in the Ottoman Empire. It happened in July 1908. This event changed how the empire was ruled. Before this, Sultan Abdul Hamid II held almost all the power. He was an absolute ruler. This meant he did not share power with a parliament. Many people felt this was unfair. They wanted a constitution to guide the country. A constitution is a set of written rules for a government.

Many different problems helped start the revolution. The empire faced hard economic times. There was a famine in 1905 because crops failed. Prices for goods were also going up too fast. In the region of Macedonia, there was a lot of fighting between different groups. This made the area very unstable. Many officers in the military were unhappy with the Sultan. They felt the empire was getting weaker. They wanted to protect their land from other powerful countries.

A group called the Committee of Union and Progress, or the CUP, led the movement. They were part of the Young Turk movement. Many members were educated people or military officers. They wanted to bring back the rule of law. They believed a constitution would help all citizens feel equal. This might stop other countries from interfering in Ottoman business. The CUP worked hard to build a large network. They reached out to many different groups in the Balkans.

The revolution began in earnest during the first week of July 1908. A soldier named Ahmed Niyazi started the revolt. He went into the mountains near Resne with 160 volunteers. He traveled to many villages to find more support. Other officers like Ismail Enver and Eyub Sabri joined him. They worked with local Albanians and other groups. This pressure forced Sultan Abdul Hamid II to make a choice. He eventually agreed to restore the constitution. He also called for a new election.
