Many people call him the "Peter the Great of Turkey." This is because he worked very hard to modernize his lands. He wanted to change how the government and the military worked. He believed these changes would make the empire stronger. His work helped start a new era of progress for his people.

Mahmud II made many big changes to his government. He reorganized the foreign office to help with international relations. In 1838, he set up the Supreme Council of Judicial Ordinances. One year later, he created a Council of Ministers to help lead.

He also took power away from local leaders called Pashas. These changes helped the central government run more efficiently. He even tried to save old traditions like the sport of archery. He asked a master to write a book about Turkish bows.

His path to the throne was very dangerous. He was the son of Sultan Abdul Hamid I. In 1808, a rebellion took place in the palace. His half-brother, Mustafa IV, was removed from power during this time.

A brave slave girl named Cevri helped Mahmud escape. She threw ashes in the faces of attackers to blind them. This allowed him to hide and eventually become the new sultan.

Mahmud II faced many hard battles during his reign. The Ottoman Empire fought several wars against Russia. In 1812, the empire lost a region called Bessarabia to Russia.

Greece also fought for independence starting in 1821. With help from Britain, France, and Russia, Greece became a free state in 1832. France also took over Ottoman Algeria in 1830. These events meant the empire was losing some of its territory.

One of his most famous acts was the "Auspicious Incident." For a long time, a group called the Janissaries held great power. They often resisted the changes Mahmud II wanted to make. In 1826, he moved to stop them for good. He used a new part of his military to crush the group.
