This was a set of rules for the government. It also created a parliament for leaders to meet. However, a war with the Russian Empire started in 1877. This war was very hard for the empire. After the war, Abdul Hamid II suspended the constitution. He then ruled with a lot of power for thirty years.

Abdul Hamid II worked to modernize his lands. He helped build many new things. For example, he worked on the Hejaz Railway.

A group called the Young Turks wanted more freedom. They wanted the constitution to come back. There were also many fights in places like Macedonia. Some groups of people fought to be independent. In 1908, the Young Turks forced him to bring back the parliament. A year later, he was removed from his position as sultan.

Today, historians look at his life in different ways. Some people call him a harsh leader. Others look at the schools and railways he built.
