The Mahdist State was a powerful government in Sudan. It started because of a religious and political movement. This movement began in 1881. A man named Muhammad Ahmad led the group.

He called himself the Mahdi, which means the "expected one." He wanted to build a society based on the original purity of Islam. He also wanted to remove the Egyptian rulers from Sudan. This period changed the history of the region forever.

To build his state, Muhammad Ahmad gathered many followers. These people were known as the Ansar.

The movement grew very quickly among the poorest people along the Nile. The Ansar used spears and swords to fight. They also learned to use guns and rifles taken from others.

They won many battles against the Egyptian forces. One large victory happened at the battle of Sheikan. This success helped the Mahdi gain more control over the land.

In 1885, the Mahdist forces reached the city of Khartoum. This city was the center of the Egyptian administration in Sudan.

A British leader named Charles Gordon was the governor there. The Mahdist rebels captured the city and killed Gordon in his palace. After this, the Mahdi moved the capital to a new place called Omdurman. The rebels also took control of other areas like Darfur. This was a very difficult time for many people in the country.

Muhammad Ahmad died in June 1885, shortly after the victory. A man named Abdallahi ibn Muhammad became his successor.

He worked to make the new state stronger. He used Islamic law to run the courts and the government. The state even had its own money for trade.

However, life was very hard for many Sudanese people. War, famine, and disease caused the population to drop by more than half.

The Mahdist State lasted for about thirteen years. In 1898, forces from Britain and Egypt fought to take back control. They defeated the Mahdist armies and ended the state's rule.

Even after the main government fell, some groups held out in Darfur until 1909. This era is a major part of Sudan's history. It shows how religious beliefs and politics can change a nation. It also shows how much people can endure during times of great struggle.
