An Egyptian officer named Ahmed ‘Urabi led a revolt. He wanted to stop British and French influence in Egypt. This movement was a nationalist uprising. It was a fight for more control over their own country. The war changed how much power Britain had in the region.

Things became tense in early 1882. The British and French governments supported the Khedive, Tewfik Pasha. In May, warships arrived near the city of Alexandria. A riot broke out in the city in June. After that, British ships began a bombardment of Alexandria in July. Much of the city was destroyed by fires.

This fighting led to the British occupying the city.

Historians still debate why the British decided to invade. Some believe they wanted to protect the Suez Canal. This canal was a vital path for ships going to the Indian Ocean. Other historians argue about different reasons. They suggest Britain wanted to protect money held by British bondholders. Some think the government wanted to gain more popularity at home. These different ideas show how complex history can be.

In August 1882, a large British army arrived. It was led by Sir Garnet Wolseley. This force had over 40,000 soldiers. The army included many different groups of people. There were infantry, cavalry, and even an Indian Contingent.

Engineers also came to help with railways and telegraphs. They worked to move the army through the Suez Canal zone.

One of the biggest battles was at Tell El Kebir. Ahmed ‘Urabi moved his forces there to defend Cairo. He used 60 pieces of artillery to protect his position. On the night of September 12, the British army marched toward him. They attacked at dawn on September 13. The battle was very intense for both sides. This war ended with Britain having a very strong influence over Egypt. It also left the Ottoman Empire with very little power.
