Mahmud II was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1808 until 1839.

He is often called the "Peter the Great of Turkey." This nickname reflects his massive efforts to modernize the empire. He introduced deep reforms in administration, the military, and finance. These changes were meant to strengthen the central government. His work laid the essential foundations for the Tanzimat era. This was a period of intense modernization that followed his reign.

His path to the throne began with a dangerous palace coup in 1808. His half-brother, Mustafa IV, was the Sultan at the time. During a rebellion, Mustafa IV ordered the execution of Mahmud and his cousin, Selim III.

A slave girl named Cevri Kalfa helped Mahmud escape the assassins. She threw ashes into their faces to temporarily blind them. This allowed Mahmud to climb onto a roof and find safety. After the rebels deposed Mustafa IV, they proclaimed Mahmud as the new padishah.

Mahmud II faced significant military challenges and territorial losses. In the Russo-Turkish War of 1806–1812, the empire ceded Bessarabia to Russia.

Later, the Greek War of Independence began in 1821. With support from Britain, France, and Russia, Greece successfully fought for independence. Mahmud was forced to recognize the new Greek state in 1832. In 1830, France also conquered Ottoman Algeria. These events showed the empire was struggling against nationalist movements and European powers.

To fix these weaknesses, Mahmud II took drastic action against the Janissaries. The Janissary Corps was an elite group of soldiers that had become very conservative. They often blocked the Sultan's attempts to modernize the military. In 1826, Mahmud orchestrated what became known as the "Auspicious Incident."

He used a newly reformed wing of the military to crush the Janissaries. He even burned the Belgrad Forest to destroy any remaining elements of the group. This allowed him to create a modern, European-style conscript army.

Beyond the military, Mahmud II reorganized the entire government structure. He worked to centralize power by bringing local leaders under royal control. He targeted the power of the derebeys and ayans, who were local notables. He also reorganized the Ottoman foreign office to improve international relations. To improve the legal system, he established the Supreme Council of Judicial Ordinances in 1838.

In 1839, he introduced a Council of Ministers to assist in governance.

Mahmud II also cared about preserving certain Ottoman traditions. While he modernized much of the state, he sought to revive traditional sports. He made great efforts to encourage the sport of archery. He commissioned an archery master named Mustafa Kani to write a book. This book detailed the history and construction of Turkish bows. This effort helped preserve much of what is known today about Turkish archery.

Mahmud II died of tuberculosis in 1839.

His death marked the end of a transformative era for the Ottoman Empire. He was succeeded by his son, Abdülmecid I. Abdülmecid I continued his father's modernization efforts through the Edict of Gülhane. The reforms started by Mahmud II changed the social and legal landscape of the empire forever. His reign proved that even established systems could be rebuilt through decisive leadership.
