He was born in Constantinople on July 27, 1612. His father was Sultan Ahmed I. His mother was Kösem Sultan, a woman of Greek origin. Murad became sultan when he was only 11 years old. At first, his mother ruled the empire for him as a regent. This means she made the big decisions while he was still young. He eventually took full control of the empire in May 1632.

Murad IV was known for being a very strict leader. He wanted to bring order back to his lands. In 1632, he banned the use of tobacco and opium. He also closed all the coffee-houses in the city. He believed these places caused people to rebel against him. Later, in 1634, he even banned alcohol. He used very harsh punishments for anyone who broke these laws. He wanted everyone to follow the rules he set.

Life in the empire was sometimes very difficult. In 1625, a sickness called the plague spread through the land. This plague was called the plague of Bayrampaşa. It was very serious and killed many people in Constantinople. In 1633, a huge fire called the Cibali fire broke out. The fire lasted for 30 hours and burned a fifth of the city. It destroyed many beautiful places and mosques. People had to wait for the wind to stop before the fire went out.

Murad IV also led his people through a long war. This was the Ottoman–Safavid War against Persia. This war lasted from 1623 until 1639. Murad IV led his army personally during the final years. In 1638, his forces captured the city of Baghdad after a forty-day siege. This war was very important for history. It helped decide the borders between modern countries like Iraq, Iran, and Turkey. The treaty signed after the war helped set these lines for a long time.

Even with his strict rules, Murad IV had many interests. He was a talented writer and a composer. He wrote poems using the penname "Muradi." He also enjoyed testing people with clever riddles. If someone solved his riddle, he gave them a large reward. Murad also liked building beautiful things. He built the Baghdad Kiosk and the Revan Kiosk in the Topkapı Palace. He died in 1640 at the age of 27.
