Jarir was a very famous Arab poet. He lived during the Umayyad era. He was known for his great skill with words. Jarir wrote two main kinds of poetry. He wrote satire to tease or mock people. He also wrote eulogies to praise people.

These poems were very important to his culture. People listened to his verses with great interest.

Writing poetry was a major part of his life. He used words to win favor with leaders. Jarir was a member of the Banu Kilab tribe. This tribe was part of the larger Banu Tamim group. He spent time in the land of al-Yamamah. He also traveled to the city of Damascus.

There, he visited the courts of powerful caliphs. He worked to show his talent to them.

Jarir's life began a long time ago. He was born during the rule of Uthman ibn Affan. This was the time of the Rashidun caliphs. He later became famous in Iraq. He won the favor of Al-Hajjaj bin Yousef. Al-Hajjaj was the governor of Iraq at that time.

Jarir's fame grew through his many verses. He became a household name in his land.

Jarir had a very famous rivalry with other poets. His biggest rival was a man named Farazdaq. They also competed with a poet named Akhtal. This feud lasted for forty years. Farazdaq wrote many poems about Jarir and his tribe. These poems are known as the Nakaid.

Jarir even visited the court of the caliph Umar II. He was the only poet the pious caliph received. Other leaders like Abd al-Malik did not welcome him.

This long rivalry shaped much of his history. Some stories say Jarir truly enjoyed the competition. People say he loved the fight with Farazdaq. When Farazdaq died, Jarir felt very sad. It is said he lost his will to live. He died shortly after his great rival passed away.
