Jarir was a famous Arab poet. He lived a long time ago. He was born in a place called Najd. He belonged to the Banu Kilab tribe. Jarir was known for his skill with words. He wrote satire. Satire is a way to tease people with poems. He also wrote eulogies. A eulogy is a poem that praises someone.

Jarir spent time in many cities. He lived in al-Yamamah. He also went to Damascus. In Damascus, he visited the courts of great leaders. He met the caliph Abd al-Malik. He also met Al-Walid I. Those leaders did not welcome him warmly. However, he was successful with Umar II. Jarir was the only poet the caliph received.

Jarir had a very long feud with other poets. His biggest rival was a poet named Farazdaq. This fight lasted for forty years. Farazdaq wrote many poems about Jarir and his tribe. These poems are called the Nakaid. People say Jarir loved this rivalry. When Farazdaq died, Jarir lost the will to live. He died shortly after his rival.
