Uthman ibn Affan was the third caliph. A caliph is a leader of the Muslim community. He ruled from 644 to 656. At first, many people supported him. But later, many people became unhappy. They felt he gave too much power to his own family. This is called nepotism. They also felt he took too much money from other lands.

Groups of people from Egypt and Iraq grew angry. They traveled to the city of Medina. They wanted a new leader to rule. They stayed outside Uthman's house for a long time. This was a siege. During this time, a letter was found. It seemed to order the death of the rebels. Many think a secretary named Marwan wrote it, not Uthman.

On June 17, 656, the rebels attacked. They set the doors of the house on fire. Uthman did not want his guards to fight. He did not want more bloodshed. Sadly, the rebels broke into the house. They killed Uthman while he was reading the Qur'an. His death caused a big crisis. People had many hard questions about how to choose new leaders.
