The Rashidun Caliphate was a time of early Islamic rule. It began after the death of the prophet Muhammad in 632 CE. Four leaders led the community during this time. They were called caliphs. Their names were Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali.

Sunni Muslims call these leaders the "rightly guided." They believe this was a golden age. The leaders were chosen by friends or by the person before them. They did not rule as a family line.

In the first 25 years, the group grew very fast. They became a strong force in West Asia and North Africa. They took control of many lands. This included the Arabian Peninsula and parts of Egypt.

Later, the group faced hard times. There was a civil war called the First Fitna. This happened because people disagreed about leadership. After five years of fighting, the era ended. A new group called the Umayyad Caliphate began in 661 CE.
