Abu al-Atahiya was a famous Arab poet. He lived a long time ago. He was born in a place called Ayn al-Tamr. As a young man, he lived in Kufa. He sold pottery there. One day, he saw a poetry contest. He joined the contest and became a poet.

Later, he moved to Baghdad. This was the seat of the Abbasid court. He became very well known for his verses, or poems. Some of his poems were about his love for a woman named ‘Utbah. He also wrote about how to live a good life.

His style was very special. Most poets then used an old form called the qasīda, which is a type of poem. Abu al-Atahiya did not use this old way. He wrote about common life. His work was more natural than the poetry of the desert. He was also one of the first philosophical poets. This means his poems made people think about deep ideas. He even had children and grandchildren who became poets too. His work was kept in books called anthologies. These are collections of many poems.
