Amr ibn Kulthum was a famous leader and poet. He was the chief of the Taghlib tribe. This tribe lived in Arabia a long time ago. Amr is remembered for his skill with words. One of his poems is in the Mu'allaqat. These are very important works of Arabic poetry. People still study his life and his writing today.

Amr's most famous poem tells many different stories. It begins with verses that are like wine songs. The poem then describes a lady traveling on a litter. A litter is a chair placed on a camel's back. It protected women from the sun and the dust. The poem also talks about the excitement of sword fights. Amr used his words to show the joy of battle.

His writing also explores many deep feelings. He wrote about the sadness of camels missing their young. He wrote about mothers who miss their sons. The poem speaks about lovers who must part ways. Amr also wrote about how fate can change a life. He shared his ideas about how life is uncertain. This makes his poetry feel very human and real.

There is a famous story about Amr and a king. The king was Amr ibn Hind of al-Hirah. The king's mother once insulted Amr's mother, Layla. Amr was very upset by this insult to his family. He defended his mother and his tribe's honor. He spoke proudly of his many great ancestors. This story may be a legend from the Umayyad era.

We only have four of his poems today. One is titled ALA HOBEY BESAHNEK FASBAHINA. This poem is part of the Mu'allaqat collection. Amr lived from the year 526 to 584. He was the grandson of the poet Abu Layla al-Muhalhel. His family history is filled with famous names. His life connects us to the history of the Taghlib tribe.
