Labid was a very famous Arab poet from a place called higher Nejd. He belonged to the Bani Amir group. This group was part of the larger Hawazin tribe.

People remember him for his great skill with words. He was also known for his virtue, which is called muruwwa. This means he lived with honor and kindness. His life changed many times as he grew older. He went from being a warrior to a man of faith.

Labid showed his virtue through a very big promise. He vowed to feed people whenever the east wind began to blow. He promised to keep feeding them until that wind stopped.

This was a hard job to do. A leader named Al-Walid 'Uqba helped him keep this vow. He sent Labid one hundred camels to provide food. This gift helped Labid show his kindness to others. Such acts of giving were part of his honor.

In his younger years, Labid was an active warrior. He wrote many poems about fights between different tribes.

Later, his life took a different path. His uncle became very sick in Medina. Labid went there to find a remedy for him. During this trip, he heard the Quran. He was moved by a short part called Surah 'Al-Kawthar'. Because of this, he accepted Islam. He became a companion of the prophet Muhammad.

Labid wrote many important things in his lifetime. One of his famous poems is in the Mu'allaqat. These are a collection of very special poems.

He also wrote an elegy, which is a poem for someone who has died. He wrote this for a person named Nu'mh Mundhii. In this poem, he spoke about how everything except Allah will vanish. The prophet Muhammad said these were the most true words a poet ever said. He even noted that another man was almost a Muslim.

We can see how Labid connects to history through his words. His poems tell us about life in the 6th and 7th centuries.

He lived from about the year 560 until about 661. His work shows the shift from tribal life to new beliefs. He lived through a time of great change in Arabia. Even today, his name is linked to great poetry. His life shows how a person can grow and change. He remains a key figure in Arabic culture.
