Writing was a huge part of his life from a very young age. He actually started writing poetry when he was only nine years old. He often wrote panegyrics, which are poems meant to praise a person. He used a style that combined different ways of writing from Iraq and Syria. This made his work feel more personal and free than older styles. He would travel to different courts to find leaders to praise. In return for his beautiful words, these leaders often gave him money and gifts.

Al-Mutanabbi was born in the city of Kufa, in Iraq, around the year 915. His family came from a group called the Banu Ju'fa. Because of his talent, he went to study in Damascus, Syria. Later, he joined a group called the Qarmatians and lived with Bedouin tribes. He even led a revolt in Syria in the year 932. After being in prison for two years, he began his life as a wandering poet. This was a time when the large Abbasid Caliphate was starting to break apart into smaller states.

One of the most important parts of his life was in Aleppo. In 948, he joined the court of a leader named Sayf al-Dawla. He stayed there for nine years and wrote his most famous masterpieces. During this time, he even fought in battles alongside the prince. However, his big political dreams caused trouble with the people in the court. He eventually left Syria for Egypt to join the court of Abu al-Misk Kafur. He did not find the leadership roles he wanted there.
