He lived during the Islamic Golden Age. He was a poet and a leader. He also held the high job of vizier. A vizier is a top helper to a ruler. He held this job three different times between the years 928 and 936. His life was filled with both great power and hard times. He worked in the government during a period of big changes. Even when things were difficult, he left a mark on history.

He was most famous for his beautiful art. Ibn Muqla was a master of calligraphy. This is the art of very careful handwriting. He did not just write by hand. He used math and geometry to make his letters perfect. He created a system called al-khatt al-mansub, or proportioned script. This system uses three main measurements to design letters. These are the size of a dot called a nuqta, the height of the letter alif, and a circle.

Ibn Muqla invented many new ways to write. He created the Thuluth style of calligraphy. He also made five other styles. One of these was Naskh. Naskh is a smooth and flowing style of writing. It was easier to read than the older Kufi style. Because it was so clear, people used it for the Qur'an.

People still use the Naskh style when they print books today. His new ways of writing changed how people saw art.

His career in the government was very busy. He started as a tax collector in Baghdad. Later, he worked with a powerful leader named Abu 'l-Hasan Ali ibn al-Furat. In 908, he was put in charge of official messages. He rose to become a vizier three separate times. These terms were in 928–930, 932–933, and 934–936.

He faced many rivals in the court. He even tried to lead military campaigns in places like Mosul and Wasit.

His life ended in a sad way. He could not stop the power of regional leaders from growing. He lost his position to a man named Ibn Ra'iq. Ibn Ra'iq took his things and put him in prison.
