Kufic is a special way of writing the Arabic alphabet. It is one of the oldest styles of Islamic calligraphy. People find it beautiful because it shows great art and delicacy.

For a long time, it was the main script used to copy the Quran. This holy book is very important to many people. Because of this, Kufic became a way to show authority and respect. It is a style that people still use in many Islamic countries today.

This writing style has a very specific look. It uses straight lines and sharp angles instead of many curves.

The letters often look very horizontal. Early Kufic did not use marks to tell different consonants apart. This means some letters looked exactly the same. Calligraphers used a reed pen to make the lines. The pen creates strokes with different thicknesses as it moves. This makes the writing look very steady and precise.

The name Kufic comes from a city called Kufa. Kufa is located in southern Iraq. In the early Islamic period, it was a very important center for learning.

The style became very popular between the 7th and 10th centuries. Scholars like Jacob George Christian Adler helped Western people learn about it. It is a style that has lasted for a very long time. Even though it is old, it changed how other scripts were made.

There are many different versions of Kufic to see. One famous example is the Blue Quran.

This book has gold letters written on parchment dyed with indigo. Making such a book required great wealth and power. Another version is called Square Kufic, which began in the 12th century. This style uses rectangular shapes like pixels. In Iran, artists use bricks and tiles to create these patterns on buildings. They often use it to spell sacred names like Muhammad or Ali.

Kufic is used for much more than just books. It can be found on coins, textiles, and even buildings.

You might see it on the flag of Iraq or the flag of Iran. In Europe, people sometimes made imitations called pseudo-Kufic. They used these shapes just for decoration on buildings. Today, Square Kufic is even used for modern logos and stickers. It shows how an old way of writing can stay useful and beautiful.
