Murad's life changed a lot as he grew up. He was born in Manisa on July 4, 1546. His father was Selim II and his mother was Nurbanu Sultan. Murad learned many languages, like Arabic and Persian. He served as a governor in different places before he became the leader. When his father died in 1574, Murad became the new sultan. He began his rule by removing his five younger brothers from power.

War was a constant part of his time as sultan. He fought the Habsburgs in the west and the Safavid Empire in the east. The war with the Safavids lasted for 12 long years.

In Africa, an admiral named Mir Ali Beg helped the empire reach the Swahili coast. This included cities like Mogadishu and Mombasa. The empire also worked with Morocco for a short time. A leader named Abd al-Malik ruled Morocco as a vassal for the Ottomans until 1582.

Money became a very big problem for the empire. Silver from the New World arrived in large amounts. This caused inflation, which means prices for food and goods went up very fast. People's money lost its value, and this led to many protests.

There was also much corruption in the government. Some people even paid huge bribes to get important jobs. These hard times made life difficult for common people and soldiers.

Murad III was also a man of great interest in culture. He loved beautiful books and many types of art. He paid for famous works like the Siyer-i Nebi, which has many drawings. He also sent gifts to religious sites, like a large candle to a monastery in Bulgaria. In politics, he sent letters to Queen Elizabeth I of England. They talked about working together against their common enemy, Spain.
