He became the sultan in 1520 after his father, Selim I, died. People in the West called him Suleiman the Magnificent. In his own lands, many called him the Lawgiver. This was because he created important new rules for his people. During his long rule, the empire reached a great peak of power. At least 25 million people lived under his control. His reign lasted for 46 years, which was the longest of any Ottoman sultan.

Suleiman spent much of his time leading large armies to new lands. He first captured the city of Belgrade in 1521. In 1522, he won control of the island of Rhodes after a five-month siege.

He also fought the Safavid Empire in Persia and took control of Iraq. His navy was very strong in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. However, he did not win every battle. He tried to take the city of Vienna in 1529 but was stopped by the Austrians. This created a long rivalry between the Ottomans and the Habsburgs.

Being a leader meant more than just fighting wars. Suleiman worked hard to change how his society functioned. He worked with a top official named Ebussuud Efendi to fix the laws. They combined sultanic laws with Islamic law to help with taxes and schools.

These changes helped make the empire run more smoothly. Suleiman was also a talented poet and a goldsmith. He supported many artists and builders during his time. This era is often called the "Golden Age" of the Ottoman Empire.

Suleiman's personal life also changed the history of his empire. In 1534, he married a woman named Hürrem. This was a break from what previous sultans usually did. Hürrem was a very influential woman from the imperial harem. Her marriage helped start a time known as the "Sultanate of Women."

Suleiman was born in Trabzon around November 1494. As a young boy, he studied many subjects like science and history. He even learned military tactics at the Topkapı Palace. These studies helped him prepare for his huge job as sultan.

Suleiman died in 1566 while he was at a siege in Szigetvár.

His death was kept a secret for 48 days. His advisors did not want the soldiers to lose hope during the battle. After he passed away, his son Selim II became the next sultan. The time after Suleiman's death brought many big changes to the empire. Some people call this the Era of Transformation. It was a time when the empire had to adapt to a new world. Even though things changed, the empire remained a major power for a long time.
