The palace is not just one big building. Instead, it is a large complex of many smaller buildings. These buildings are spread out around four main courtyards. High walls surround the whole area to keep it private. Some parts of the palace were designed to be very quiet. Architects used grilled windows and secret paths for this reason. This helped the sultan and his family stay away from the public.

Construction of the palace began in 1459. Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror ordered the work to start. He wanted to build great buildings that were worth seeing. He hired the best masons and carpenters for the job. At first, it was called the "New Palace." This helped people tell it apart from the Old Palace. Over the years, the palace grew much larger through many renovations.

Many important people lived and worked here. The Grand Vizier and other officials met in the Imperial Council building. The Sultan's family lived in a large area called the Harem. This part of the palace had more than 400 rooms. A woman named Hurrem Sultan helped make the Harem much larger. Later, Sultan Abdülmecid I moved the court to Dolmabahçe Palace in 1856. This happened because the sultans wanted more modern luxury.
