It was the very first palace built for the Joseon dynasty. The name Gyeongbokgung comes from a poem about great blessings. A Korean official named Chŏng Tojŏn chose this name in 1395. Today, it is a major place for people to visit. It serves as a symbol of Korean history and culture.

Building the palace was a huge task for the early leaders. King Taejo began work on the new capital in 1394. Construction on the palace started in the 12th month of that year. The first phase was finished by September of 1395. Some say the palace had 390 rooms. Others think it had as many as 755 rooms.

It was a busy place for many years. It even had scientific tools like a water clock.

History brought many hard times to the palace grounds. In 1592, the Imjin War caused the palace to burn down. For about 270 years, the palace was mostly unused. This happened because the country had very little money. Later, Japan colonized Korea in 1910. They took many buildings away from the palace.

By 1945, only 40 of the original buildings remained. A large colonial building was even built on the grounds.

Since Korea became free, people have worked hard to fix it. Significant restoration efforts began in the 1980s. There was a big plan from 1990 to 2010. A second plan started in 2008 and will last until 2045.

These plans help recreate dozens of lost buildings. Workers are following old designs to make it look right. This helps bring back the dignity of the old palace.

Visitors today can see many wonderful things at Gyeongbokgung. You can visit the National Folk Museum of Korea there. The National Palace Museum of Korea is also on the grounds.
