This kingdom began in 1392 after the older Goryeo kingdom fell apart. A leader named Taejo founded the new state. He decided to name it Joseon to honor an ancient Korean state. He also moved the capital to a place called Hanseong. Today, we know this capital city as Seoul.

Early leaders worked hard to build a strong government. King Taejong was a very powerful third king.

He wanted the king to have more control over the land. He stopped rich nobles from having their own private armies. This helped make the national military much larger and stronger. He also changed how taxes were collected from the land. These changes helped the government earn more money to run the country.

One of the most famous rulers was King Sejong the Great.

He ruled during a time of great discovery. He helped science, farming, and medicine grow very quickly. In 1443, he did something amazing for his people. He created Hangul, which is the Korean alphabet.

Before this, people used difficult Chinese characters to write. Hangul made it much easier for everyone to read and write. He also helped protect the borders from pirates and other groups.

Life was not always peaceful for the people of Joseon. The kingdom faced many hard battles and invasions. In 1592, Japanese forces invaded the land. Later, other groups from the north also attacked.

These wars were very difficult and weakened the kingdom. Because of these troubles, Joseon began to stay away from other countries. People in the West even called it the "hermit kingdom" because it was so isolated.

Even after many struggles, the legacy of Joseon stayed strong. The kingdom eventually ended in 1897 when the Korean Empire began.

Many things we see in Korea today started during this time. The way people speak and write comes from Joseon. Much of Korean culture and social rules also come from this long period. The way the government is organized also has roots in the Joseon era. It was a time that truly built the foundation for modern Korea.
