Goryeo was a powerful state on the Korean Peninsula. It lasted from the year 918 until 1392. This long period helped shape the identity of the Korean people. In fact, the modern name "Korea" comes from the name Goryeo.

The state began during a time of division called the Later Three Kingdoms. During this time, the land was split between different groups. Goryeo eventually brought these groups together into one nation. This was a very important step for the history of the region.

The story of Goryeo began with a general named Wang Kon. He served under a ruler named Kung Ye in a state called Taebong. Kung Ye was known to be an unstable and cruel leader. In 918, other generals chose Wang Kon to take his place.

Wang Kon became the first king and took the name Taejo. He moved the capital to a place called Kaesong. He also worked hard to rebuild the old city of Pyongyang. Taejo wanted to show that Goryeo was the true successor to the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo.

Making the country whole was a big job for the new king. Taejo was very kind to the leaders of other kingdoms. In 935, the kingdom of Silla peacefully joined Goryeo. Later, in 936, Goryeo used an army of 87,500 soldiers to conquer Later Baekje.

Taejo also welcomed many people from the kingdom of Balhae. These people were refugees who had lost their homes. By welcoming them, Taejo helped merge different groups into one single people. This helped create a strong and unified national identity.

Life in Goryeo was full of art, trade, and religion. This era is often called the "Golden Age of Buddhism." Buddhism was the main religion and had a huge influence on daily life.

In the 11th century, there were 70 temples in the capital alone. Trade was also very busy during this time. Merchants traveled from very far away to reach Goryeo. Some of these traders even came from the Middle East. The capital city was a major center for making goods and selling them.

Even though Goryeo was a time of culture, it also faced many hard times. The state had to fight against northern empires like the Liao and Jin.

Later, the Mongol Empire invaded the land. Goryeo had to deal with many different wars to protect its borders. In its final years, the state also fought off pirates from Japan. Eventually, a leader named Yi Sŏnggye led a change in government. This ended the Goryeo dynasty and started the Joseon dynasty in 1392.
